BR2-20: Information Technology

Computers are everywhere - in our homes, our schools, our shops, offices and hospitals. We use the every day, but what do we know about them? Where did they begin, and and when? What is Moore's Law, and how do you pass the Turning Test? What can Deep Blue do, and how did Nolan Bushnell begin with 500 dollars and end can find the answers to all these questions - and much more.
Information Technology is a book in the Factfiles subseries of Oxford Bookworms. As you may know, Factfiles is a nonfiction subseries. Many of the books are about computers, and some about technology.

The language in general is fairly simple, but the impression is that it's noticeably more challenging than stage 1 books. Most of the vocabulary is fairy simple, but there are many proper nouns. This is unavoidable in a book introducing a place, but may give an impression of difficulty to some students, Picking page 20 at random, the numbers of words in each sentence are as follows: 17, 14, 8, 30, 20, 10, 10. These figures give a mean of 15.6. One noticeable difference from Stage 1 books is the absence of very short sentences of fewer than 10 words, which may slow down reading speed a little.

The chapter that appealed to me the most was Chapter 11: 'I love you' (and other viruses). There is a story about computer viruses. The viruses are difficult to stop; they can damage millions of computers in a very short time. (254/8173 words)

wedding ceremony

On November 23rd, my brother's wedding ceremony was held. I got up around 9 O'clock, and my mother came to my house around 10 O'clock. We had to wear Nomesode and Furisode, so we went to the New Sky Hotel to wear them. My brother so nerves. I was really looking forward to the day! We are very good brothers. I saw my mother's younger brother and his wife. They live in Osaka, so I have never seen them for a long time. My sister-in-low was very beautiful and she was nerves, too. She wore Uchikake and two dresses. One is a White wedding dress, it is very beautiful. If I get married, I want to wear it. My mother and grandparents were crying when my brother and his wife came up in the wedding hole. (137/7883 words)

BR2-19: Scotland

Oxford Bookworms Factfiles is a sub-series in the Oxford Bookworms series. It is devoted to nonfiction, and most of the books are about countries or famous cities or environmental problems.

The book I read today is Scotland. Generally, the book is quite easy to read. There are few embedded clauses, and the sentences are simple in structure. The average sentence length is about 7 words. There are some much longer sentences, but most of those are lists or have easy-to-understand clauses such as "because" clauses. The vocabulary is quite simple, with few unknown words that learners will need to look up in the dictionary. But the books do have quite a lot of information and the number of words is fairly large. Thus, these books are recommend for learners who are aiming to progress beyond very short and simple books such Usborne First Reading or Oxford Reading tree.

The book consists of ten chapters: This is Scotland, Scotland today, Scotland's past, Edinburgh, Glasgow, The Highlands, The Islands, Traditional Scotland, Eating and drinking, and Scotland tomorrow.

Chapter 2, Scotland today, there are more than five million people in scotland. Scottish people are called Scots, but not Scotch. Scots people are British, because Scotland is part of Britain, but don't call them English! The scots and the English are deferent.

Overall, the book was very interesting for me and it gave me a lot of knowledge and interested about Scotland. I want to know about Scotland more and more.  The book has many words, so it is more useful for me to learn English than easier books like Foundation Reader. I try to read the book had many words.  (277/7746 words)
